The Nar Phu Valley Trek is one of Nepal's most remarkable off-the-beaten-path adventures, taking you deep into the remote highlands of the Annapurna region.
This 10-day journey leads from the lower Marsyangdi Valley into the restricted valleys of Nar and Phu, where ancient Tibetan-influenced culture, traditional stone villages, Buddhist monasteries, dramatic Himalayan landscapes, and centuries-old mountain traditions remain beautifully preserved.
The trek combines the remote landscapes of the Nar Phu Valley with the spectacular crossing of Kang La Pass at approximately 5,320 m / 17,450 ft, before descending toward the Annapurna Circuit village of Ngawal and continuing to the lower Marsyangdi Valley.
Unlike the busier sections of the classic Annapurna Circuit, Nar Phu offers a genuine sense of remoteness and discovery. The valley remains relatively isolated, providing an opportunity to experience a unique Himalayan environment where traditional culture and high-altitude mountain life continue to play an important role.
Because Nar Phu is a government-designated restricted trekking area, a special trekking permit is required, and the trek must be arranged through an authorized trekking agency with the required guide and documentation.
The Nar Phu Valley Trek is ideal for trekkers looking for an experience beyond Nepal's more popular trekking routes.
Travel through secluded mountain landscapes, dramatic gorges and high-altitude valleys far from the busier trekking trails.
Experience traditional Tibetan-influenced Buddhist culture, ancient monasteries, chortens, mani walls and centuries-old village traditions.
Challenge yourself with the crossing of Kang La Pass, one of the major highlights of the journey, and enjoy breathtaking views across the Annapurna Himalayas.
Explore traditional settlements such as Meta, Phu and Nar, where stone houses, cultivated fields and mountain traditions remain an important part of local life.
The trek brings together remote valleys, high mountain passes, dramatic scenery, cultural discovery and warm local hospitality in one carefully planned journey.

The journey follows Nepal's changing landscape from the Kathmandu Valley through rolling hills, rivers, terraced farmland and traditional settlements before reaching Besisahar, the gateway to the Annapurna region.
After arriving in Besisahar, we check into our hotel and prepare for the journey into the higher mountain valleys the following day.

Meta Elevation: Approx. 3,560 m / 11,680 ft

Driving Time: Approx. 6–8 hours, depending on road conditions
After breakfast, we continue toward the upper Marsyangdi Valley by private jeep, passing through beautiful mountain villages and dramatic river landscapes.
Our road journey reaches Koto, the principal gateway to the Nar Phu restricted area. After completing the necessary checkpoint and permit formalities, we begin trekking into the remote valley.
The trail follows the Nar Phu Khola through a spectacular gorge, passing forests, waterfalls, suspension bridges and steep cliffs before ascending toward Meta.
Meta is our first overnight stop inside the remote mountain landscape, offering impressive views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks.
Overnight: Meta
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Phu Elevation: Approx. 4,080–4,110 m / 13,385–13,485 ft

Today we move deeper into the Nar Phu Valley.
The trail continues through an increasingly dramatic landscape of barren hills, rocky terrain and deep mountain gorges. Along the way, we pass the former settlement of Kyang, with impressive views toward Annapurna II, Pisang Peak, Kang Garu and surrounding peaks.
Continuing along the Phu Khola, the landscape gradually opens as we approach Phu Village.
Perched high above the valley, Phu is one of the most fascinating settlements in the region. Its traditional stone houses, narrow pathways, Buddhist monuments and surrounding agricultural fields provide a remarkable glimpse into traditional Himalayan life.
We spend the night in Phu and begin to experience the unique culture and atmosphere of this remote mountain community.
Overnight: Phu Village
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Elevation: Approx. 4,080–4,110 m / 13,385–13,485 ft
Walking Time: Approx. 2–3 hours of gentle exploration
Today is dedicated to acclimatization and exploration in Phu.
Rather than continuing immediately to a higher elevation, we spend an additional night in Phu to allow our bodies to adjust gradually to the altitude.
We explore the village and surrounding landscapes, visit local Buddhist sites and enjoy spectacular views across the remote valley.
One of the cultural highlights is Tashi Lakhang Gompa, an important Buddhist monastery associated with the spiritual traditions and history of Phu.
This relaxed day also provides an opportunity to observe traditional village life, local architecture and agricultural practices while preparing for the higher elevations ahead.
Overnight: Phu Village
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Elevation: Approx. 3,490 m / 11,450 ft
Trekking Time: Approx. 6–7 hours
After breakfast, we leave Phu and retrace part of the valley before continuing toward Nar Phedi.
The trail descends through rugged terrain and follows the Phu Khola, passing through Kyang and other historic areas. Along the way, we encounter mani walls, chortens, suspension bridges and dramatic views of the river cutting through the valley.
As we approach Nar Phedi, the atmosphere becomes increasingly peaceful and spiritual.
We spend the night near the Nar Phedi monastery, enjoying the quiet mountain surroundings and the simple atmosphere of this remote Himalayan settlement.
Overnight: Nar Phedi
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Nar Elevation: Approx. 4,110 m / 13,480 ft
Trekking Time: Approx. 5–6 hours
Today we ascend toward the historic village of Nar.
The trail climbs across rocky slopes and traditional stone steps while dramatic views of Kang Garu and the surrounding Himalayas gradually open before us.
After crossing several ridges, we reach the entrance to Nar Valley and continue toward the village.
Nar is renowned for its traditional architecture, Buddhist culture, cultivated barley fields and spectacular high-mountain setting.
After arriving, we explore the village and enjoy the surrounding scenery while preparing for tomorrow's acclimatization day and the demanding Kang La crossing ahead.
Overnight: Nar Village
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Elevation: Approx. 4,110 m / 13,480 ft
Walking Time: Approx. 2–3 hours of gentle exploration
Today is our second acclimatization and exploration day before crossing Kang La Pass.
We take a relaxed walk around Nar Village, explore the surrounding area, visit local cultural and religious sites, and enjoy spectacular mountain views.
This additional acclimatization day is particularly valuable because the following day involves the longest and most physically demanding section of the trek.
A gradual approach to altitude helps prepare the body for the high-elevation crossing while also allowing more time to experience the unique culture and landscape of Nar.
Overnight: Nar Village
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Kang La Pass: Approx. 5,320 m / 17,450 ft
Ngawal Elevation: Approx. 3,650 m / 11,975 ft
Trekking Time: Approx. 9–11 hours
Today is the highlight and most challenging day of the Nar Phu Valley Trek.
We start early, often before sunrise, to allow sufficient time for the long ascent and descent.
The trail climbs gradually from Nar toward Kang La Phedi, followed by a steeper ascent toward Kang La Pass.
At approximately 5,320 meters / 17,450 feet, the pass offers spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding Annapurna Himalayas, including Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Chulu peaks, Lamjung Himal and other snow-covered summits.
After taking time to appreciate the scenery and capture photographs, we begin the descent toward the greener landscapes on the Annapurna side.
The descent eventually becomes easier as we approach Ngawal.
After this demanding day, a warm meal and comfortable lodge provide a welcome opportunity to rest and recover.
Overnight: Ngawal
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Elevation: Approx. 760 m / 2,493 ft
Driving Time: Approx. 7–9 hours, depending on road and traffic conditions
After breakfast, we leave the high mountains and descend toward the lower Marsyangdi Valley.
Depending on road conditions, we travel by suitable vehicle toward Besisahar, passing through mountain villages and beautiful landscapes along the way.
As we descend, the scenery changes dramatically from the dry, rugged environment of Nar Phu to greener valleys, forests and agricultural settlements.
We arrive in Besisahar and spend our final night in the region before returning to Kathmandu.
Overnight: Besisahar
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
Driving Distance: Approx. 175–185 km
Driving Time: Approx. 6–8 hours
After breakfast, we begin our return journey to Kathmandu.
The scenic drive follows the river valleys and winding hills of central Nepal before gradually reaching the Kathmandu Valley.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, our 10-Day Nar Phu Valley Trek comes to an end.
We hope the memories of the remote Nar and Phu valleys, traditional mountain communities, spectacular Himalayan landscapes and your crossing of Kang La Pass remain with you long after your journey home.
