Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is an important source of freshwater for the Kathmandu Valley. The park was originally established as a watershed conservation area, and the protection of its watersheds remains an important part of its role.
According to the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and Buffer Zone Management Plan 2024–2029, the park serves as a water source for Kathmandu Valley and surrounding communities. Water from rivers and watersheds associated with the park, including the Bagmati, Syalmati, Bishnumati, Rudramati, Sangla, Tusal Khola and Nagmati, contributes to Kathmandu Valley's drinking-water supply, irrigation and other water needs.
The Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation also identifies the Shivapuri area as a major source of Kathmandu's drinking-water supply, highlighting the park's important role in protecting the valley's water resources.
