For the safety and well-being of trekkers, the Government of Nepal requires foreign trekkers on designated trekking routes to be accompanied by a licensed trekking guide and to obtain a TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) Card through a government-registered trekking agency, in accordance with the applicable trekking regulations.
The revised provision was introduced by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) in 2023 and came into effect after March 31, 2023. Under this provision, trekkers on the trekking routes covered by the requirement must arrange their trek through an authorized, government-registered trekking agency and be accompanied by a licensed trekking guide.
The provision was introduced to enhance the safety and security of visitors trekking in Nepal's mountain and protected areas. It also aims to help reduce incidents such as trekkers getting lost, health-related emergencies and difficulties caused by natural disasters, while providing access to professional support and assistance when required.
In addition to improving trekking safety, the provision supports employment opportunities for workers in Nepal's tourism sector and helps discourage unauthorized trekking operations.
Trekkers should note that the guide and TIMS requirements apply to the trekking regions and routes specified by the Government of Nepal and the Nepal Tourism Board. Requirements, applicable routes, fees and procedures may be revised from time to time. Travelers are therefore advised to check the latest official information before beginning their trek.
